Train Travel is Terrific

We Need to Catch Up to European Standards on Train Travel

sunny 25 °C

Today was our last full day in Germany and the beautiful sunny weather graced us once again. After breakfast we headed to the train station to make our way to our destination for our morning excursion.

Travelling by train in Europe is always so efficient and convenient. We purchased a day pass which was good for unlimited use on trains, buses and trams. Just make sure to validate the ticket before boarding (or pay a 60 Euro fine if caught).

Today we headed to Dachau to visit the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial site. Train from Munich (S2 line) to Dachau was about 20 minutes then immediately transferred to connecting bus #726 for about a 5 minute ride to the Memorial site. Very easy.

The camp was one of the first to open in 1933. The memorial was built in 1965 as a place of remembrance on the former prison grounds of the Dachau Concentration Camp. The site has re-created certain rooms to what they would have looked like back in the day, yet some places are still in their original condition. Visiting these kinds of places is always a grim reminder of the atrocities during this time in history. I am always humbled.

Once back to Munich we stopped to relax at the hotel for a bit, but with beautiful sunshine we needed to get out there and explore. We walked to the Hofgarten, which was located right next to the Royal Residences. This green space is used by a lot of people - tourists and locals. The sunny Saturday afternoon brought many people out to enjoy. We headed to the Viktualien Market for lunch - so many places to find something for everyone. We had a yummy German bratwurst (aka. big ass hot dog) - seemed very fitting for our last day in Germany. We continued to walk around and even had gelato...again!
